During the last few days, the number of captures at the station has clearly slowed down. Normally we get some slow days in March, so we are not very surprised, but it always feels so slow when the few captures come after good days like it was for the first days of the season. Officially spring starts today, on March 20th, but clearly the birding spring has been on for quite a few weeks already!
Interestingly, the passage of Woodchat Shrikes Lanius senator has stopped, yet we had caught no less than 29 during the first 5 days. More interestingly, all the ones caught so far have been adults (EURING 6), with a rather balanced sex-ratio. As we published in the past, Woodchat Shrikes eventually take profit from tired migrants and can turn into really cruel predators. Soon we will have some more updates on their curious feeding behaviour in the desert!
Another species that started in really good numbers is the Subalpine Warbler Curruca iberiae, with 93 ringed in the first 9 days. Most of the Subalpines ringed so far have also been adults (EURING 6), and mostly males, so we still expect perhaps some passage of adult females and certainly many second-year individuals. As we studied in detail the last few years, thanks to the great fieldwork conducted by Armando, we understand much better the reasons for their territorial behaviour in the area. It’s always so remarkable to see them jumping around their bush, chasing away the other Warblers and eventually singing vigorously – but with still quite many kilometres to reach the breeding grounds.
The most interesting species seen in the last few days was an Isabelline Wheatear Oenanthe isabellina, a mostly Asian species that turns up regularly in Morocco, both wintering and in early spring migration. When trying to catch this one close to Yasmina, the Isabelline met one of the local White-crowned Wheatears Oenanthe leucopyga, a resident species from the desert areas in N Africa and the Middle East, that seemed to discuss which one could get caught first.
On the other hand, we’ve caught already three Desert Sparrows Passer simplex: this beautiful couple and a third one, male, ringed last year also here! And last but not least, it’s worth to highlight again that we continue trapping a few Iberian Chiffchaffs Phylloscopus ibericus.
The next days we expect a weather change, with wind and cloudy skies. Perhaps just what we need to get some migrant birds back in the area!
Finally this year’s team (for the first part of the season) is here: Claire, Nadine, Marlene and Sophie are already working on their research projects. We also have had three fantastic volunteers from France: Thibaut, Sophie and Aurélien, that just left, and we’ve welcomed Amandine and Carol. Thank you all! 🙂

Durant els darerrs dies, el nombre de captures a l’estació ha baixat notablement. És habitual que tinguem períodes més fluixos al mes de març, pel que no estem sorpresos, però sempre és un contrast després dels bons dies que vam tenir al principi. Oficialment la primavera comença avui, 20 de març, però clarament ja fa dies que és primavera ornitològica!
El pas de capsigrany Lanius senator ha parat força de cop, tot i queue ja n’havíem capturat fins a 29 durant els primers 5 dies de campanya. És interessant que tots els capturats han sigut adults (EURING 6), amb una sex-ratio força equilibrada. Tal i com vam publicar far un temps, els capsigranys s’aprofiten d’altres ocells migradors cansats i poden esdevenir depredadors ben cruels. Aviat tndrem més novetat sobre la curiosa alimentació d’aquests ocells al seu pas pel desert!
Una altre espècie que ha començat amb molt bons números és el tallarol de garriga Curruca iberiae, amb 93 individus anellats els primers 9 dies. La majoria dels tallarols de garriga anellats també han sigut adults (EURING 6), i la majoria mascles, pel que encara esperem pas de femelles adultes i dels ocells de segon any. Tal i com vam estudiar en detall els darrers anys, gràcies al bon treball de camp realitzat principalment per l’Armando, ara entenem molt millor les raons per les que mostren un fort comportament territorial aquí. Sempre sorpren veure’ls saltant d’una branca a l’altre dels tamarius, expulsant “intrusos” als seus petits territoris i puntualment cantant amb ganes – tot i que els hi queden encara molts quilòmetres per arribar a les àrees de reproducció.
Les espècies més interessants dels darrers dies han sigut un còlit pàl·lid Oenanthe isabellina, una espècie principalment asiàtica que apareix regularment al Marroc, tant com a hivernant com a migrant primerenc. Quan intentàvem capturar aquest exemplar prop de Yasmina, el còlit pàl·lid es va trobar un dels còlits tuaregs Oenanthe leucopyga locals, una espècie resident de les zones de desert del N d’Àfrica i Orient Mitjà, i semblava que discutíssim a veure qui es capturaria primer.
D’altra banda, ja hem anellat fins a 3 pardals del desert Passer simplex: aquesta bonica parella i un tercer, mascle, que ja estava anellat de l’any passat! I per acabar, continua sent destacable el pas de mosquiter ibèric Phylloscopus ibericus.
Els propers dies esperem un canvi de temps, amb vent i cel ennuvolat. Potser és el que necessitem per a tornar a reanimar la migració…! Esperem que comenci bé la primavera!
